Savage Beauty at the Met

May 20, 2011

Yesterday was spent taking a Mother/Daughter trip to NYC for the day to see the Alexander McQueen “Savage Beauty” exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. To say that the exhibit was amazing is the understatement of the year, it was absolutely breathtaking. Encompassing decades of his work, the exhibit included pieces starting with his 1992 MA Graduation collection Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victims and ended with his partially completed Autumn/Winter 2010-2011 collection. It goes without saying that McQueen was a genius. He could turn the seemingly grotesque into a thing of beauty, one need only reference his 1998 “Spine” corset from the 1998 Spring/Summer Untitled collection.

If you have the ability to see the exhibit before it closes in July, take advantage of the opportunity. Seriously, run your bum over to the Met as soon as possible and plan for oodles upon oodles of other McQueen lovers and tourists alike making their way through this spectacular presentation. It’s worth paying the extra $7 for the guided audio tour and the gorgeously bound and presented accompanying book is a steal at $45. As a McQueen lover I was beyond enthralled and even the tourists who looked seriously lost and confused at the beginning of the exhibit left exiting with a looks of wonder and awe. Seriously, I would trade my first born for pretty much any piece from the Widows of Culloden, Highland Rape or The Girl Who Lived in the Tree collections.

After spending some time checking out some of the other galleries at the Met, my mum and I made our way over to the Park Ave. eatery Artisanal. Lunch moopig cheese fest at this yummy French bistro was delicious and decadent. It had all the major food groups; pate, brie, truffles, and chocolate. Following lunch we made our way over to Soho where we did some minor major damage at Ted Baker, Bloomingdales, Brandy Melville and Topshop.

I enjoy long walks through Neiman Marcus, red soled shoes, skinny black pants, oversized cocktail rings, obnoxious bows, nipped waists and full skirts.
